Interview with Diane Walton

An interview with Diane Walton, the woman who keeps On Spec happening as a literary space for Canadian SF stories.

An interview with Diane Walton
by Derek Newman-Stille

I had an opportunity to have a chat with Diane Walton, the managing editor of one of my favourite magazines, On Spec, a Canadian magazine of the fantastic. Diane has been with On Spec since its beginning. In addition to her editing duties, Diane Walton has published in the Northern Frights volumes, in On Spec’s own pages, and in the anthology Divine Realms. Feminist, speculative author, and fan of the fantastic, she is a fascinating character with some interesting perspectives on the Canadian fantastic.

Spec Can: Could you tell readers a little bit about yourself to begin this interview?

Diane Walton: Always the tough question. I’ll give you a bunch of true facts and you can pick and choose.

The Reetion Path Through the Okal Rel Saga

ChristenBodenbenderChristel Bodenbender gave me an idea for a reading path through the Okal Rel Saga at our lunch last week. (Pictured, left, at the SFU authors even where we met last year.)

She’d 75% through Part 1: The Courtesan Prince, which is cool, but she’s not into Sevolites. She likes the Reetions.

How should Reetion-only fans read the series?

Part 1: The Courtesan Prince – Rire’s egalitarian compu-communist society meets neo-feudal Sevildom.

Part 5: Far Arena – Rire’s honor is tested by how they weather the disruption of Amel’s trial, and the associated capture of Kali Station and the “celebrity fever” disruption.

Part 8: Gathering Storm – Erien’s cultural exchange throws civilizations together in celebratory mode. Hilarity and drama ensue. Some tensions get resolved. Grab rats feature.
